Gene developed masterful collages, filled with images and information from architectural theory, life in the tropics, California historical ephemera and his personal and family life.
In the 1970's and early 1980's Gene participated widely in correspondence art, also known as Mail Art. The collage format was the perfect international language and compresses multiple thoughts into a mailable format.

Another exploration of Genes was photography. He taught us techniques of shooting models and work under black light. At the time we were pushing the film technology using Kodachrome slide film.This was all pre-digital, and meant exposure time,focal length and aperture had to be perfect.

Exploring color xerograpghy when it first hit the market, Gene and his student assistant Ralph Bowman , would make trips up to Los Angeles,CA. where the printing was first available in the 1970's. The above image is typical of how Gene would take multiple projects and montage them together into a cohesive visual statement. A natural colorist, Gene used color for its visual impact as well as its spiritual impact.
